Amsterdam in 24 Hours

Amsterdam in 24 hours | Marissa Vicario

Growing up in Kentucky, I never traveled a ton. My dad was fairly well-traveled so he tried to instill an appreciation of it in us by taking the family to California, Italy, Paris … but I mostly preferred to stay comfortable at home. In my twenties, I caught the travel bug and decided I wanted to see as much of the world as possible. Luckily, my husband loves to travel too so we try to take as many trips as possible.  On our recent trip to Croatia, we had a 24-hour layover in Amsterdam. Since I had never been, we did our best to experience Amsterdam in 24 hours.

Finding healthy food in Amsterdam proved relatively easy. The city seems to be as health-conscious as New York or L.A.

We stayed at The Hoxton, the former home of the Mayor, which is situated with canals on either side. Upon arrival, we grabbed an easy breakfast – an almond milk matcha latte and overnight oats – at the hotel restaurant, Lotti’s.

After a brief rest, we strolled around the neighborhood and grabbed ginger shots at The Cold Pressed Juicery. We chose to walk but most people bike. In fact, it is the most bike-friendly capital city in the world and 30 percent of the local commuter population does so by bike.

We hoped to have time to visit The Anne Frank House and The Avocado Show, a restaurant that celebrates all things avocado but the wait times were too long for both.

While waiting for our dinner table, we swung by Rosie’s, an eatery focused on simply prepared fresh produce, for a glass of wine and a few nibbles – olives and an artichoke.

We ended the night at Pesca – a friendly and cozy theater concept restaurant where you create your own meal of fresh fish, side dishes and drinks. After a long flight, it was the perfect way to end our experience of Amsterdam in 24 hours.

Hopefully, I’ll have a chance to go back soon and experience the city more completely.

What are your favorite places to see and things to do in Amsterdam?
