How I Reinvented My Body and Mindset at Chaise23

by Marissa on May 9, 2012

I never thought I’d say this, but … I can’t wait to put on a bikini this summer!

When I took a hiatus from running last month, I was hopeful that I could find an enjoyable workout to replace it. Negative self talk about my body coupled with my running woes had plagued me all winter and left me looking for a new workout . My only two criteria:

Bungees tone and lengthen

1. I had to enjoy it and

2. It had to deliver noticeable results- and fast!

I’m strong, but I wanted to lean out and tone up before summer.

Not even a week or so later, I read about Chaise23 in Daily Candy and then again the same day in Vital Juice. I didn’t think twice before I signed up for my first class the very next day.

Hard at work in a Cardio Chair class

Chaise23 fuses Pilates moves with aerobics, strength training and ballet to reinvent the shape of your body. You can mix and match their signature Reinvention Method classes (Reinvention Chair and Cardio Chair) with TRX training. Reinvention method classes use a chair and resistance pedal to target the deep core muscles while overhead bungees work to strengthen and tone the upper body and improve your posture.

After my 55-minute cardio chair class (classes are 55 or 40 minutes), I was hooked on the full-body workout and bought a month of unlimited classes. Before I knew it, I was traveling from TriBeCa to 23rd Street three mornings a week or more to get my fix.

Now, after two months of cardio chair and reinvention chair classes along with staying on track with healthy eating, I’m walking taller, my abs are more defined , my backside tighter and my arms more toned.

It has completely changed the way I feel about my body.

According to the New York Times, there are 517 gyms in Manhattan, many of which are boutique or specialized. I’ve visited my fair share of them but crowded classes and cult followings aren’t my thing.

The second I walked into Chaise23, I felt at home because the atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious and the classes are small enough to ensure each person gets individual attention.

In fact most of the instructors know my capabilities so well by now that just when I thought I’d mastered pikes and single leg lunges on the chair, they have a modification to up the intensity and make my workout more challenging.
