5 Ways to Live More Sustainably

Ways to Live More Sustainably | Marissa Vicario | Sustainability Car Kit

One // Make a Sustainability Car Kit. By 2025 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Reduce your use of plastic by filling a canvas bag with anything you may need on the go – a resusable water bottle, refillable mug, reusable straws and bamboo utensils – stash it in your car or desk drawer for easy and convenient access.

Do your part to solve the single-use plastic problem by taking the Pledge Against Plastic. Ten people who pledge by October 14 will win a Sustainability Car Kit!

Two // Drive Less. Whether you choose to walk, ride a bike, carpool or take public transportation, you can use less fuel and reduce your carbon footprint by skipping unnecessary driving. That means less air pollution, noise pollution, carbon emission and greenhouse gas emission.

Three // Recycle, Resell or Donate. Whether it’s trash, old clothes, furntiture or household items, consider selling, recylcing or donating anything you no longer need or use. Many non-profits accept tax-refundable donations, consignment and thrift stores will literally buy your old threads from you and some will even donate anything they won’t take for resale.

Four // Buy Less. In a consumer-centric society, this one’s not always easy, but it’s worth it. When you do choose to buy, support local and ethically sourced brands. Choose to shope with Certified B Corporations which are legally bound to make sustainable decisions on behalf of their workers, customers, suppliers, community and the environment. Create a capsule wardrobe which allows you to mix and match many outfits from a select of a few essential items or consider a clothing rental service like Rent the Runway

Five // Reduce Household Energy Use. Besides the obvious ways like turning off lights when not in use and avoiding unnecessary water usage, choose energy-efficient appliances or make the switch to green power. Check with your energy provider regarding energy saving programs.
