Five For Friday: Gabrielle Bernstein

When I first met Gabrielle Bernstein in 2008, she was speaking about happiness at the New York Junior League. At the time, I had a lot of drama in my life and never considered I could be a happy person. I was going through the motions. I thought to myself then that Gabby was the kind of person I’d like to be friends with. Then, one year later, I had hit rock bottom with a romantic relationship gone bad and knew there had to be a better way. I had vowed to myself not to go on the way I had been. They say that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. And there was Gabby speaking again at the Junior League. She had a group coaching program starting one week later. I signed up and so began my transformation to the happier, healthier life I’m living today.

Q1. What is the #1 wellness practice you live by? That thing that you do every day without fail because it revs you up from the inside out.

A. Mentally – Be willing to see positivity and love in all situations. When you feel the desire to attack, judge and act out with fear simply say, “I’m willing to see this differently.” Physically – Keep it simple. If you can make a commitment to move in some way everyday you will feel great! Whether it be a long walk, a powerful stretch or a hardcore workout you’re serving your body. Spiritually – One word. Q2. The premise of the blog is that wherever you are in life, is exactly where you need to be. How did you get to where you are today?  

A: I got to where I am today by being comfortable wherever I needed to be in any given moment. Accepting and honoring my struggles allowed me to fearlessly work through them rather than stay stuck. Being present in each moment has been a true gift. I take daily right actions towards strengthening my inner state of peace and therefore I am guided to everything I need on the outside. My outer actions are spiritually aligned and therefore totally hooked up.

Q3. What was your biggest transformation along the way?

A. My greatest transformation was the decision to stop seeking happiness “out there” and surrender to the fact that true happiness was inside me all along. Knowing this is what has allowed me to surrender to my inner hustle and release my outward struggle.

Q4. If you could only own five items, what would they be?

A. The book A Course in Miracles, Water, a miracle pillow, an ipod with all the music I love, my power crystal

Q5. What is the theme song for your life right now and why?

A. Natalie Merchant’s Kind and Generous

This song reminds me to have gratitude for the ever-present love that is totally backing me at all times!
